7 stargazing spots in the Maltese islands that will amaze you
Malta may not offer vast wilderness, but these stargazing spots are secluded enough to offer an awesome sight of the night sky.

One of the great features of Malta is that it offers plenty of wide open spaces. It's a real treat for anyone fascinated by astronomy! The one drawback is that, unless you are out at sea, there will always be a little light pollution, but, who cares if you can only see a million stars every day instead of three million once in a while? Here are some of the best stargazing spots in Malta.

1. Dingli Cliffs & Bahrija

Dingli Cliffs and Bahrija, just past Rabat, are as isolated as it gets in this north-western part of the island. You'll not mind a few lights twinkling from the boats at sea far below and the warm glow from the nearby village, as you're sure to enjoy a stunning night sky on a clear night.

2. L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha

L-Ahrax tal-Mellieha is a good choice if you like the idea of peeking at the stars through the trees as you night hike along a cliff to the calming sound of the sea below. Again, the only light is faint and pretty to behold, comprising the Red Tower and Mellieha Church that both seem to float, suspended in the darkness.

3. Comino Tower

Fancy a bit of adventure? Spend the night camping in Comino, and take a night hike to Comino Tower. The Tower itself is lit up at night, and will guide you as you go. Even better, go there to enjoy the sunset, wait for the stars to come out and walk back to Santa Marija Bay in the dark to enjoy them.

4. Dwejra

Inland, head to Dwejra, which is perched high up on a hill. On a clear moonless night, there are plenty of stars above, while the urban lights can seem like stars below. Talk about feeling at the centre of the universe!

5. Mnajdra Temples, Zurrieq

Add a little mystery from an unknown history to the marvels of the universe by visiting the area of Mnajdra and Hagar Qim Temples at night. The Temples themselves are lit, however a little veer to the edge of the cliff towards the lower coast will give you a perfect setting to contemplate the mysteries of life.

6. Xghajra

An unlikely little village tucked away in a hidden nook at the south of the island, Xghajra is one of the Astronomic Society of Malta's favourite stargazing spots because it is, well, kind of hidden away from everything else! Find a good spot that is sheltered from any nearby light and you're in for a treat of a night.

7. Wied il-Ghasri, Gozo

Malta's little sister is far less urbanised, and hence offers several more places suitable for stargazing, even though the island itself is smaller. One of my favourite spots has to be Wied il-Ghasri - there is absolutely nothing around for miles and, therefore, zero light pollution. Never on these islands have I seen the darkness of the night lit up with so many sparkles in the sky.

Are you ready to look up tonight?
