Want to visit the sister island? Here are all the ways you can get to Gozo from Malta
A trip to Malta is never complete without a visit to our gorgeous sister island.
Gozo is an island brimming with beaches and idyllic hiking paths, making it the perfect spot to get up close and personal with Mother Nature.
Plus, if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Maltese islands, Gozo should definitely be on your list.
With that being said, here are all the different ways you can get to Gozo from Malta.
Gozo Channel Ferry:
This first option is easily the most popular option. The Gozo Channel ferries cross from Cirkewwa, Malta to Mgarr, Gozo, with the journey taking around 25 minutes.
The great thing about this service is that it runs very frequently and continues doing so all throughout the night. The full schedule can be found here.
You can choose between boarding the ferry as a pedestrian – in which case you’d go through the Cirkewwa passenger terminal – or as a driver. Ticket prices vary depending on the type of vehicle you are driving.
To get to the Cirkewwa Harbour via public transport, you need to catch one of the following buses: X1, 41, 42, 221, 222, 101.
The X1 bus can also take you directly from the Malta International Airport to the Cirkewwa Harbour.
Payment for boarding the ferry is made when heading back to Malta from Gozo.
Catching the ferry to Cirkewwa, Malta from Mgarr, Gozo, is just as straightforward, the only difference being that you’d need to pay your fare.
To get to the Mgarr Harbour, you can catch any one of these buses: 301, 303, 323, 322. These will stop you right at the terminal’s doorstep.
Fast Ferry:
Another way you can get to the sister island is via the Fast Ferry. Instead of leaving from the North of Malta, this ferry leaves from the Valletta Harbour. Like the Gozo Channel Ferry, however, the Fast Ferry also docks at the Mgarr Harbour.
To get to the ferry terminal in Valletta, you can either catch the 300 bus route, which goes through Msida, or the X300 shuttle bus from the Valletta bus terminal. You can also make your way down to the terminal from the bus terminus on foot or via the Barrakka lift.
One of the few downsides of the fast ferry is that it does not board cars. Additionally, it’s way less frequent than the Gozo Channel and does not operate through the night. The full Fast Ferry schedule can be accessed here.
With that being said, it only takes 45 minutes to get to Gozo from Valletta via the Fast Ferry – a much quicker way of getting to the sister island if you happen to be staying in the central area of Malta.
Private or tourist boats:
Joining a private boat tour is another way you can get to the sister island. This is relatively pricey, however it is bound to treat you to a fun and unforgettable day out.
