Then & Now! Can you recognise Gozo’s Mgarr Harbour in this beautiful throwback shot?
The throwback photo dates back to about 1985.

For generations, Malta’s sister island of Gozo has served as a refuge for locals and visitors looking for a quiet, simple break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Still, while many will agree that going to Gozo feels like going back in time, the little island has not completely escaped the signs of progress – however one may feel about it – and this recently unearthed photo showcasing the picturesque Mgarr Harbour, shines a spotlight on just how much things have changed!

The photo, which is dated to about 1985, features the inner area of the harbour, just inside the area whether the Gozo Ferry docks. Among the quaint buildings that dot the shore, the familiar Gleneagles Bar – a local favourite that’s reached ‘icon’ status – is visible, owing to is distinctive design and blue bordered paintwork.

Around it, the scene is a quaint one, with colourful fishing boats and traditional Maltese luzzu boats taking up the space in the water, while a handful of (now vintage) cars can be seen alongside the buildings.

When compared to that same scene today, it’s easy to see how things have changed! The ferry still docks in the same place, but around it, the traditional boats have been replaced with yachts and modern sailing boats, and the roads leading up to the harbour are a fair sight busier too – particularly during this week, Santa Marija week!

Happily, the Gleneagles Bar still takes its place, welcoming its patrons as it always has, and the Mediterranean Sea beyond continues to be a beacon of beauty, as it always was.
