Missing winter? Rain could be hitting Malta as soon as next Wednesday
Several sources have predicted some rainfall this week.

Multiple sources are in agreement that this week might bring about some very unexpected weather…

The meteorological office housed within Malta’s International Airport is forecasting possible showers on Wednesday 10th, Thursday 11th, and Friday 12th August. Crazy, right?

Explaining the potential bad weather, local weather page Maltese Islands Weather noted that an anticyclone making its way across the Mediterranean will get slightly weaker during the next few days.

Due to the high pressure in Northern Europe, currents of cool air will be sent towards the upper levels of the atmosphere towards Italy and the central Mediterranean, creating a cool pool, destabilising the local atmosphere, and thus, creating clouds.

Although most of this is set to occur over Italy, Malta is still within the zone of instability, as pictured below.

In recent days, many have been speculating as to whether or not summer would bring any rain over the Maltese islands. After all, Santa Marija week consistently tends to bring about some bad weather – hence the local saying l-għarajjex ta’ Santa Marija.

Last week, local weather page Aġġornament tat-temp had even said that there’s a very good chance that a storm will hit the islands on 15th August due to the arrival of cold currents in the areas towards the South-West and North-West of Malta.

Nonetheless, Maltese Islands Weather had noted that it was still too early to confirm such forecasts.

Looking forward to this potential rainfall?
