Cute as can be! Harmless ‘blue button’ jellyfish spotted in Maltese waters
The blue button jelly causes low irritation and is most commonly spotted in springtime.

A relatively harmless species of jellyfish, known as the ‘blue button jellyfish’ (porpita porpita) has made a rare summer appearance in Maltese waters.

This small hydromedusa species grows to a maximum diameter of five centimetres and is known to have an intense blue colour.

You’re most likely to spot a blue button jellyfish during springtime in coastal areas within the Western Mediterranean region.

Locally-renowned marine biologist Alan Deidun described this species as "an uncommon hydrozoan colony which does not sting."

For more information on anything jellyfish-related, be sure to check out the MEDJELLYRISK manual.

Have you ever come across these button-like jellies?
