1. The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)

The legendary Azure window may have long gone, but it lives on in Kevin Reynolds’ The Count of Monte Cristo, filmed in locations all over the three islands, with Comino taking a starring role as the Chateau D’If. But, before Edmond Dantes was imprisoned on the island fortress, he enjoyed a night of passion with the love of his life, Mercédès on the rocks beneath – yes, you guessed it – the famous Dwejra arch.

2. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

A stunning clifftop location in Xlendi, in the southwest of Gozo, was used for this Sean Connery film, which is brimming with visual effects. The production had originally intended to come to Malta for the water tanks in Kalkara, and had looked at locations which could double for Nairobi. But, in the end, this was the site which made it to the final film. Incidentally, Sean Connery is not the only 007 who came to Malta for work: a certain Daniel Craig also shot on the island when he starred in Steven Spielberg’s Munich.

3. Game Of Thrones (2010 - 2019)

The since-lost Azure window makes another appearance in the first series of the phenomenally popular TV series Game of Thrones. When Daenerys married Khal Drogo at Dwejra, surrounded by hundreds of his most faithful, little were we to know that the show would become such a huge hit, or that such an iconic landmark would collapse just a few short years afterwards.

4. Fort Ross: In Search of Adventure (2015)

Otherwise known in Russian as Форт Росс В поисках приключений (yes, we got that too), this film used many Maltese seaside locations. The salt pans in Xwejni, Gozo, however, were the site for the construction of a pirate village.

5. By the Sea (2015)

Reports of marital troubles between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt on the set of By the Sea seem to not have been an exaggeration, but surprised many. The couple lived on the small island for a few months while filming Jolie’s homage to the French New Wave at Mgarr ix-Xini, a small bay to the south of the island.
